Washed-out cabin driveway rebuilt near Priest Lake

Priest Lake area
4 days
A steep cabin driveway that washed out every spring, rebuilt with proper drainage and a solid crowned surface.

The problem

The owners of a lakeside cabin were losing their driveway every spring. Runoff cut deep ruts down the slope, and by the time it dried out, the gravel had all migrated to the bottom. Getting up to the cabin in a normal vehicle was becoming impossible.

The solution

We rebuilt the driveway from the base up. After re-cutting the path and laying geotextile fabric, we set a culvert to carry the seasonal creek across, built up a proper crowned base, and added roadside swales to carry runoff away. The new surface sheds water instead of channeling it.

Challenges

The slope and a seasonal water crossing were the real challenges. We had to size the culvert for spring melt and shape the crown carefully so water left the road at the right points.
